Softball Bulls Get Big Win Over No. 14 Oregon State

Tuscaloosa, Ala.- The USF softball team defeated the third seed in Region 4, Oregon State. The Bulls take the lead in the series, with a 2-1 record over the Beavers. Jessi Kowal threw a three hitter on her way to the 2-1 victory.
The Bulls jumped ahead in the game, scoring a run in the top of the second inning. Cindy Turek led off the inning with a double to the wall in center field. With one out, catcher, Priscilla Smith hit a ball through the infield, scoring Turek from second. The RBI single gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Bulls added to their lead. With two outs, Ginny Georgantas hit a single to left field. Smith then hit a single to right center, moving Georgantas to third, Smith moved to second on the throw to third. Sophomore, Stephanie Roberts then hit a ball to the shortstop that was misplayed, allowing Georgantas to score.
With a 2-0 lead, Kowal was pitching a no-hitter going into the sixth. With one out, Oregon State put together back to back singles, giving them runners at first and second. Kowal pitched out of the jam with the shut out still in tact.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Beavers hit an infield single, the runner advanced to third on two throwing errors by the Bulls. Kowal then got the next batter to ground out to second, with the run scoring on the play. Kowal retired the last two batters for her first ever NCAA Regional victory.
The Bulls will play Michigan tomorrow at 5:00 PM. The Wolverines won their first game today against Tennessee-Chattanooga, defeating the Mocs 1-0. |
